报告摘要:
Conventional optics (such as microscope) can only confine light at scales about the order of the wavelength of light, due to the diffraction effect. Through nano-engineered metallic nanostructures, light can be concentrated into nanometer-scale spots and the optical energy can be massively enhanced. This has found important applications in many areas, such as sensing, imaging and data storage. In this talk, I will introduce how light can be concentrated at the nanometer scale, the fundamental limit of light confinement, and the applications of plasmonic nanostructures. In addition, I will introduce the perspective of nano-focusing of light in the far field without evanescent fields, through a peculiar optical phenomenon called superoscillation, which could lead to the development of far-field superresolution optical microscopy.
